Excerpt from the chapter
Judge Andrews:
My thoughts were
interrupted as I made eye contact with a sturdy looking older gentleman
approaching me. His muscular
neck supported a large head with hair cropped in a military flat top. Steel-gray eyes and a well-trimmed
mustache gave him the look of a giant English terrier. I returned his gaze with a smile
and a first rate nod. Stepping
up to me, he glanced down at the label of judge posted on my jacket and all
pretense of cordiality fell from his hardened face.
“You the judge?” he
snapped.
“Yes sir, my name is
Don Andrews. How do you do?”
“Why?”
I wasn’t exactly sure
what he was asking me, why was I Don Andrews? “Why?” I asked.
“Why in heaven’s name would you
select something like that?” he said, pointing over my shoulder to a half
sheet abstract painting with an honorable mention ribbon.
Unclear as to where
his questions were leading, I thought perhaps he wanted a better
understanding of abstract art.
“Well sir,” I began,
“in order to appreciate abstract organization, you must…”
“What is it?” he
huffed.
Clearing my throat I
tried again. “You see, abstract…”
Instantly he cut me
off.
“Pray tell,” he
bellowed, veins popping red, “what does that… that thing mean?”
Now things were clearing
up. He wasn’t looking for
education. My thoughts on the
virtues of abstract organization were of no interest whatsoever. About then I also realized that my
earlier terrier description was somewhat off the mark. There before me was a bulldog with
a bad tooth snarling in my face!
No, he wasn’t looking for enlightenment, what he wanted was a pound
of my flesh!…
